For temporary relief while you wait for your appointment, over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. Rinsing gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) can help cleanse the area and reduce bacterial load. A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can reduce swelling.
Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum (this can cause burns), avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks if the tooth is sensitive, and try to chew on the opposite side. If the pain is severe, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing, seek dental care as soon as possible as these may indicate a serious infection.
